Spain comes in second last in terms of entrepreneurship according to the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD): just 2.6% of Spaniards between the ages of 18 and 64 found or co-found their own company, far below the European average which stands at 4%. The good news is that if they survive the first three months, Spanish companies come closer to the European average, with 2.5% compared to 2.8% overall. This proves that, once the initial struggles are overcome, Spanish entrepreneurs have more than enough talent to bring their ideas to fruition.

Fostering a culture of entrepreneurship in Spain is key to making sure that these great ideas don’t get left on the shelf out of fear of failure, a lack of understanding of bureaucratic procedures, or a lack of tools to transform them into a profitable business. Doing this on time is also key, as the entrepreneurs of tomorrow are currently in the classroom.

To make this happen, Fundación Repsol has launched Entrepreneurship in Vocational Training, a program aimed at developing the entrepreneurial spirit and employability of vocational training students. With the support of a mentor who is specialized in entrepreneurship and a Repsol volunteer, vocational students receive five months of training and hands-on workshops about entrepreneurship, leadership, teamwork, lean startup methodology and design thinking, and communication, among other topics. According to entrepreneur and mentor of the Entrepreneurship in Vocational Training program, Néstor Guerra, “it is about giving them the tools so that they understand the process from a practical standpoint and helping them develop the skills that will ultimately get them working like true entrepreneurs.”

The vocational training centers located near Repsol's industrial facilities were the first to join this promising initiative, which looks like it is here to stay. Four winning projects from A Coruña, Cartagena, Puertollano, and Tarragona have already been announced and they too may soon form part of that 2.5% of successful Spanish companies.
